Elsa y Fred: Barcelona's Hip El Born Gastrobar

Located in the trendy Sant Pere neighborhood, just north of Barcelona’s ultra-hip El Born quarter, Elsa y Fred is quirky in an enchanting sort of way, much like the streets that surrounds it. Once an overcrowded, blue collar area, Sant Pere has seen more than its share of neglect in the past, but lately it’s been quickly evolving into an artistic enclave and cultural hub with indie fashion shops and craft coffee spots, but it’s gentrifying quickly. Launched by sisters and Sofía and Camilla with husband chef Ramón Segura five years ago, they finally opened Elsa y Fred in 2013 by restoring an old textile store that had been closed for years. Since then, this hip gastrobar has captured the attention of those who pass through the area, seduced with the vintage vibe, and affordable menu of elegant tapas and traditional Spanish dishes with a modern twist. Warm and inviting with an air of old-world elegance, complete with tasselled lampshades, large fireplace, leather armchairs and mismatched recycled furniture to create a stylish and fun ambiance, Elsa y Fred was named after an endearing film of the same name: the story of two people in their twilight years who discover that it's never too late for true love and make dreams come true. With an extensive menu of brunch, lunch and artisan specialties made every day by Ramon, ranging from tuna tartare to delicious patatas bravas, this soulful 'gastro tapas bar' has quickly managed to stand out among the local area businesses. Weekend brunches have become a popular Barcelona Sunday morning hangout, while at lunch and dinnertime, it's reservation only for chef Ramón's well priced prix-fixe menu of modern Catalan comfort food classics.
