L'Angolo di Mario in Pesaro: Overlooking the Adriatic

Overlooking the sparkling turquoise Adriatic Sea on a glorious day of blue skies and warm sunshine, L'Angolo di Mario was the absolutely perfect restaurant to launch our arrival in Le Marche after our fabulous two weeks in Umbria. Wrestling with rainy weather for many of the days, the bright sun and warm temperatures were a welcome change. After a lovely drive from Umbria over the Apennines to Le Marche, we timed our arrival in Pesaro for a memorable lunch at this seaside treasure, and shown to a prime table overlooking the water with sensational views of the Adriatic coast for which Le Marche is famous. Offering a delicious menu specializing in fish and seafood, we began with an Aperol Spritz and basket of warm rosemary and olive oil piadina with sea salt which our charming waiter recommended. We followed with Crostini con Sardoncini Marinati e Anellini di Tropea (crostini of marinated sardines in olive oil and pink onion) and a delicious Caprese con Bufala. Verdicchio has a long history in the Marche region and always keen to try local wines, we ordered a cold and delicious bottle of 2015 Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi to enjoy with our meal — excellent! With a tempting list of housemade pasta on the menu, we settled on the Strozzapreti al Tonno Fresco con Pesto di Pistacchio e Zucchine alla Julienne (a typical pasta from the region with fresh tuna, pistacchio pesto and zucchini) and spectacular Tagliolini allo Scoglio with seafood, clams, mussels and prawns which Eva, our wonderful Italian language teacher in Toronto, had dreamily described to us in anticipation of our culinary journey to Le Marche. Fortified with a frozen glass of Limoncello and hot frothy macchiato, we enjoyed a leisurely walk along Pesaro's waterside boardwalk before wending our way to Castello di Monterado.
