Lido Azzurro: A Liquid Blue Culinary Paradise

As Mae West famously quipped, "Too much of a good thing can be wonderful". This was also our mantra as we arrived for our second glorious day on the beach at the Lido Azzurro Beach Club in Marina di Ragusa. Fortified with our fluffy beach towels, books and Ocean Potion sunscreen, we settled into our beachfront lounges and savoured our last day in southern Sicily. The weather was perfect, the sea was warm, and we had lunch reservations for the third time at Lido Azzurro Serafino. The staff were getting to know us quite well. After ordering a Planeta Etna Bianco to enjoy with lunch, we sipped our wine and savoured the intoxicating view and sound of lapping waves. Beginning with two salads, one a Caprese which was not on the menu but the chef made for me anyway, we also feasted a fabulous Insalata 'Vastasa' di Mare, a dish that celebrates all the flavours of a Sicilian summer by the sea: octopus, prawns, anchovies, greens beans, olives and whipped potato topped with a prawn crisp. Having thoroughly enjoyed chef Termini's pasta dishes, we decided to explore some local grilled fish: Tagliata di Tonno con cipolla dolce e pistachio, delicious thick slices of rare tuna with sweet onions and chopped pistachios, and spectacular Grigliata Mista di Pesce, a fabulous mixture of grilled local fish and seafood. As a special treat, we shared a luscious Gelato al Cioccolato, before resuming our supine positions on the beach and taking a last few plunges in the azure blue Mediterranean Sea.
