London Shell Co. is a floating restaurant aboard The Prince Regent, a stunning wide beam canal boat lovingly restored after 30 years of leisure service on London’s waterways. Moored on Regent’s Canal near Paddington station, sibling duo Harry and Leah Lobeck and Head Chef Stuart Kilpatrick’s love of food, wine and boats birthed London’s first canal boat pop-up restaurant, with an emphasis on understanding the origins of not only delicious locally sourced seafood, but also lovingly, handpicked wines, all in an incredible and intimate environment. Offering static lunches and cruising dinners as part of this remarkable restaurant, with an extraordinary menu of seasonal inspired dishes, we were excited having made reservations for lunch aboard The Prince Regent on a sunny autumn afternoon. The narrowboat is all ship-shape wood, with sea-creature themed loos and a tiny open kitchen where chef Stuart Kilpatrick sends out plate after plate of simply but perfectly cooked dishes.
Starting with two glasses of lovely Hattingley Valley English Champagne, we followed with some plump and delicious Dorset Estuary oysters, followed by some sensational crispy squid served with silky smooth black squid ink aioli, and hot smoked salmon with pickles and dill. We selected two wines available by the glass, to enjoy with our entrées, a Portuguese Adega de Monção Vinho Verde, and an unusual but outstanding Schuchmann Saperavi red wine from the former Soviet republic of Georgia. With four main courses to choose from, we selected the onglet with hand cut chips and garlic anchovy butter, and Cornish hake with n'duja, tomatoes and lentils. With an excellent small crafted menu of sensational dishes and warm attentive service, Harry, Leah and Stuart have created something truly beautiful along Regent’s Canal — definitely one of London’s most unforgettable dining experiences.
