Napier: The Art Deco Capital of the World

A coastal city on New Zealand's North Island, Napier is set amid the renowned wine-producing region of Hawke's Bay. Founded in 1855, Napier, formerly known as Ahuriri, is Hawke's Bay's oldest town. After it was rebuilt after a massive 1931 earthquake, the city was rebuilt in the Art Deco style with colourful landmarks like the zigzag-patterned Daily Telegraph Building, and is now considered the Art Deco Capital with the highest concentration of art deco buildings anywhere in the world.  Along the tree-lined waterfront promenade the Marine Parade, the 'Pania of the Reef' statue depicting a Maori maiden, is a symbol of the city.
