On the edge of the Vucciria, Casa del Brodo dal Dottore is one of Palermo's oldest restaurants dating back to 1890, and is still dear to the hearts of locals for its namesake dish, Tortellini in Brodo, which is the specialty of the house made with a traditional broth cooked using an ancient family recipe. This century-old institution also serves old Sicilian specialties that you might not encounter outside of home kitchens, such as Fritelle di Fava, Carni Bollite, a tantalizing assortment of tender, herb-flavoured boiled meats often associated with Northern Italy, and outstanding pasta dishes such as Pasta con le Sarde, fresh sardines with raisins and pine nuts, and luscious Spaghetti con Vongole Veraci, all handmade by Chef Gaetano Romeres, son of the current owners who have run Casa del Brodo for five generations. The interior is somewhat worn and has some less attractive modern details, but this doesn’t stop it from being full most evenings. The staff are warm and welcoming, the menu extensive — a panorama of true Palermo cooking — and with an impressive wine list that is almost exclusively Sicilian, Casa del Brodo was a fine choice for one of our first evenings in Palermo.
