Yamato: Japanese-Style Izakaya in Nara

The ancient name for Japan, Yamato is a local Izakaya around the corner from Nara's elegant Noborioji Hotel, serving regional cuisine prepared with locally grown Nara ingredients, such as Yamato beef, chicken, vegetables and handmade tofu prepared using Otofuke Osodefuri soy beans from Hokkaido. Arriving for a casual dinner after exploring Nara all day, Yamato was warm and welcoming with a wonderful menu of Japanese Izakaya comfort food favourites and an enticing list of local sake. Beginning with a complimentary amuse-bouche, we followed with a selection of small shared dishes including Tatsuta-age marinated fried chicken, grilled Japanese steak, Tsukemono preserved pickles, handmade Yakisoba noodles from Mount Yoshiko with vegetables and dried bonito flakes, and a lovely platter of salmon, amberjack and squid sashimi on a bed of shredded daikon. With visions of our comfortable double king size bed back at the luxurious Noborioji, the nicest thing was that we only had a five minute walk back to the hotel before tucking ourselves in for the night after a long day.
