A new addition to Niagara’s culinary scene, Masaki Sushi opened last summer, specializing in sushi, sashimi, maki rolls, tempura, teppanyaki and multi-course omakase tasting menus with dishes selected by executive chef Jay Han who uses only the finest seafood shipped straight from Japan. Tucked away under the Moffat Inn in the heart of historic Niagara-on-the-Lake, Masaki Sushi is also just steps to the world famous Shaw Festival, making it one of the popular new dining destinations for the sushi-savvy theatre crowd and lovers of gyoza and udon. Arriving for an early dinner before going to see the final night of Stephen Fry’s celebrated Mythos Trilogy at the Shaw, we were seated at the grey stone sushi bar with front row seats of all the itamae action. Beginning with a cold beer and hot Green-Gen Mai tea served in a square Japanese Nanbu cast iron teapot, we decided on the chef's choice of sashimi and classic nigiri sushi, but with more time and better appetites after lunching at Two Sisters earlier, we could have devoured most of the menu. There's always a next time.
