Elliot's Café in London's Borough Market

Borough Market has been a part of London's food culture since the 13th century and has existed at its current location since 1755. Elliot’s Café makes the most of being in the heart of Borough Market creating dishes from ingredients sourced from the market and offering a menu which directly reflects the range of produce found you will find available on any day. With its daily changing menu based on seasonal produce available at the market, there's no shortage of variety or creativity.

It's the second venture from Brett Redman and Rob Green who also run the Pavilion Cafe in Victoria Park. Part of their plan is to encourage people who live around Borough to pre-order Elliot's lovely loafs, nibble on some olives, or pick at a plate of prosciutto di Parma and pickled peaches, something the friendly staff effortlessly encourage. The wine list is refined but honestly priced with a focus on organic and bio-dynamic wines, cider from the New Forest or beers from a range of small scale London brewers. And much like the food, the bijou cocktail list is inspired by ingredients from the owners’ preferred market traders. All together Elliot's is a little gem and perfectly suited to the spirit of Borough Market.

With Elliot's daily changing menu, it's always a joy discovering new dishes to try like the Middlewhite Pigs Head kromeski appetizer which we just had to try, given the absolutely crazy name. The little bite-size morsels of braised and shredded pork were shaped into small cubes, lightly breaded and deep fried for a succulent and mildly flavoured delight. Enjoyed with a dab of Elliot's tangy homemade tartare sauce, pigs head has never tasted so good!

Elliot's most popular dish offered during the week is their burger, considered to be on of the best in London. Served on one of their homemade buns, the burger is dressed first with sautéed onions then topped with Comté cheese and a perfectly grilled beef burger. Served with Maris Piper Roast Potatoes, it's no wonder they sell more burgers than any other dish — and for £12, it's a bargain. Also on the lunch menu was Elliot's Lonk Lamb Leg with Green Sauce which was delicious with hot and cheesy Cauliflower Cheese, Maris Piper Roast Potatoes and a healthy and tasty Carrot and Blood Orange Salad.

The Sweets menu

Tempting as it was, Elliot's Sweets menu with a selection of puds, market fresh cheeses, 'Square-Mile' coffee and digestifs, was more than we could entertain after our decadent but delicious lunch. It's easy to understand why Elliot's is such a popular destination for those shopping at Borough Market — fabulous food, great prices and friendly smiling staff, who could ask for more?
